Free ski demo and Winterstart races!

This Sunday, December 6 marks the opening event of the Grand Mesa Nordic Council's winter race series.

The Winterstart features two races, a 5K Classic at 11AM and a 5K Freestyle at 12:30PM. Do them both and double your fun!
(Details here: http://bit.ly/GMNCracing)

New for this year: a free gear demo, sponsored by Boulder Nordic Sport. This event will give local skiers a free opportunity to ask gear questions and try out the latest gear for xc skiers. The equipment demo will take place at Skyway during the Winterstart Races, from 10:30-2:30. Everyone is welcome.

Come try out the latest gear including skis, boots and poles. Experts on hand will answer questions and help you find the perfect gear. Brands represented include Fischer, Rossignol, Madshus, Atomic, Salomon, Alpina, Swix, Holmenkol and SkiGo. This is a free demo, not a sales event, but GMNC members who attend will have a one-time opportunity to sign up for members-only pricing through BNS.

elk party

As Winslow so aptly put it, "the elk were having a woodsy last night."
You may have noticed some of the party favors they left behind on the
Scales Lake tracks. Anita and I were out relatively early this morning
and had the opportunity to see 15 or 20 of the ruffians fleeing the
scene. A welcome Thanksgiving treat. Happy ski holiday to all! Richard

What a weekend!

The sun was shining and conditions were great for this weekend's training camps on the Grand Mesa.

The Grand Mesa Gliders camp provided lots of fun for local kids, and at least four teams from around the region came to the Mesa to enjoy our early season snow.

Grooming for week 11/23-29

Plan was to have trails groomed today (Mon.), but currently down a groomer. Otherwise, we are looking at Wed. P.M., or Thurs. A.M.; then Fri. A.M. and Sat. P.M..
Will update as needed.

Grooming report

Kenton groomed Scales Lake today. Conditions are excellent.

He also groomed a lesson area by the Skyway trailhead for the Gliders camp this weekend and part of the arroyo trail. Lions loop is getting melted out in the snow and is not recommended for good skis.

Jon will do touchup grooming Saturday late afternoon (or first thing Sunday morning if we get snow).

Grooming report

Jon touched up Scales Lake Rd and dog loop on Sunday. He also rolled
Lions loop, but beware--Lions has some stumps and rocks. Probably best
to use rock skis on that trail.

Jon will be back up on Wednesday 11/18 to touch up Scales and Dog
Loop. Then Kenton will groom for the kids ski camp late Friday. We'll
do touch up again Saturday afternoon or Sunday.

Get out and ski!

Snow!

Up and coming Mesa State College skier Kelsey Follett.

It's Snowing!

Yes, we have snow! Kenton and Jon groomed Scales Lake and the dog trail and they'll be back tomorrow to groom some more. It's snowing pretty hard up there...

Conditions were a bit soft today, but coverage is excellent on Scales and if it keeps snowing we may be able to groom some more trails.

Depending on how this storm plays out, we may groom Sunday too. Updates will be posted here.

Hanging in there!

Thanks to some hard work and sweat by our grooming crew, the Scales Lake Road trail is still skiable, despite a week of warm weather. The best skiing is in the trees, from the snowmobile corridor to Kannah crossing.

Snow is coming, hang tight! We'll keep an eye on the weather but expect fresh snow and grooming by Saturday morning.

Grooming Report

Hi Everybody,

Went up today and shoveled snow into the bare spots and graded the skating lane from skyway parking lot to the microwave tower.  Skating is still pretty good and fast. The classic track very marginal, with earth showing through in some spots and the tracks are glazed over. Think snow...

Sunday Grooming Update

Jon Canty spent several hours shoveling snow today and he also grated the skate lane on Scales Lake to the towers. The sunniest spots are still a little scrappy, but from the snowmobile crossing to the tower the skiing is still quite good.

Kenton will be out tomorrow doing some more shoveling on the sunny spots.

Think snow! Thanks to Jon and Kenton for their hard work.

Snow Report

The snow on Scales Lake Rd is holding up pretty well, considering how warm it has been this last week. Areas with continuous full sun have a few bare spots (ski alert you can easily bypass them without hitting dirt or harming your skis). Once you get past the section near the parking lot, conditions improve. We'll try to get out and do some shoveling before the next snow.

Snow is pretty scrappy over at County Line. Better to stick to Scales right now.

We'll groom again once we get a little more snow. The forecast shows a 20% chance of snow on the Mesa Sunday night and Monday. Do your best snow dance and check back here for updates.

No grooming today.

No grooming today. We will groom after the next snow--tomorrow afternoon or Monday. Updates will be posted here.
